Description

Circa 460-423 BC. AR tetradrachm, 16.3 gr., 25 mm.

Obv.: Dionysos, wearing ivy wreath and himation, reclining to the left on a donkey walking to the right; in his right hand a kantharos, propped on his right knee, his left hand on the donkey’s right flank.

 Rev.: ΜΕΝΔΑΙΟΝ; linear square frame enclosing a linear square divided into four compartments by beams studded with nails; all within a shallow incuse square.

 Ref.: Noe, Mende cf. 83 (for the reverse) and 85 (same obverse die).

 Reverse partly tooled, nevertheless Nearly Extremely Fine.
